NYC Marathon Mile by Mile - Miles 22 and 23
We return to Manhattan! If your supporters saw you on 1st Ave. at Mile 19, they can go east to 5th Ave. and see you here.
Mile 22: Madison Ave. Bridge and Returning to Manhattan
Elevation gain: +1 meter (+4 feet)
Best Part: Marcus Garvey Park
Photo Opportunity: Last Damn Bridge sign
The Madison Avenue Bridge is the last marathon bridge.
Unlike the others, there’s barely an incline. The total elevation gain is 12 feet over 0.15 miles. There’s a dedicated marathon supporter on the right with a sign saying, “Last Damn Bridge.” Celebrate this accomplishment and soldier on!
You will turn right onto Fifth Avenue, which you will take until you enter Central Park. Supporters will build as you run south, especially after 130th St. 125th St. is a bustling commercial street and a stop on the subway. You’ll see a walls of people on 3 sides: to your left, right, and ahead of you.
This is where you will turn right and run around beautiful Marcus Garvey Park.
The park will be on your left and brownstone apartments are on your right. Residents and their guests will root you on as you approach the Mile 22 marker.
Mile 23: Fifth Avenue to Central Park
Elevation Gain: +3 meters (+9 feet)
Best Part: Getting to Central Park on your right
You will turn right south of Marcus Garvey Park and onto Fifth Avenue.
If your supporters saw you near the Mile 19 marker, they will see you again on your left.
This is a relatively easy stretch. After about a half mile at 100th St. you will see Central Park on your right. This is Duke Ellington Circle, with a statue of Duke Ellington on your right. Behind the many spectators you will then see the Harlem Meer, then the beautiful Conservatory Garden at 103rd St.
Right after that, you’ll cross the Mile 23 marker.
